Imagine that one day you wake up and get dressed and your partner takes you by the hand pops you in the car and, instead of dropping you at work, the car takes off and flies to Mars. You're already confused, right, as you were expecting to go somewhere familiar.
When you get there he helps you out if the car leads you to a group of Martians and other women and turns around and leaves. You look around and everyone seems to know everyone else and they're all busying themselves about. You don't know why you're there, where to go if you need the toilet, how long you'll be there, what there is to eat, what behaviour is appropriate or not.
How do you think you would feel? Scared? Angry? Confused? Tearful? Panicked? All of the above?

That is exactly how your children feel when abandoned at planet school for the first time.
We assume that they will be OK but our assumptions come from years and years of experience with different schools. Experience that they don't have yet as they've only been alive for a couple of years. So you may as well be dropping them off on Mars. This is why the Mars mission that Elon Musk and his team are preparing for has extensive training programs for their recruits.
If your child is starting or moving schools they need to go on a planet school training program, which might look something like this:
Landing on planet Mars could be a terrifying nightmare or an incredible adventure. It all depends on how much preparation you've had for the journey. Landing on planet school is no different.

If your child is starting or moving schools they need to go on a planet school training program, which might look something like this:
- A tour of the school including where the bathrooms are
- Testing out of the playground equipment
- Meeting the teacher, teachers assistant, principal, secretary and any other relevant staff
- A run through the daily curriculum
- A taste of the school lunches or a trip to the shops to choose a lunch box and water bottle
- Dinner time discussions around feelings associated with going to a new school. This may include stories you have about your own experience and how it turned out
- Reminders of other new things they've done that we're scary at first but turned out well
- An escape plan. What to do if things go horribly wrong
- Spending time with your child in the first day or even first week or more until they feel safe and settled
- Letting children be involved in the discussions around and decision regarding which school they go to in the first place or at least discussing your reasons for choosing the school you did.
