It is our responsibility as parents to live our dreams. Only by doing this can we ever hope to inspire and enable our children to do the same. Now what most people do is that they have some fantasies about what they would like their life to be like and they then set some rather arbitrary goals around this and then wonder why they abandon their New Year’s Resolutions by around March.
The thing is, if your goals are not directly related to your values, you will never achieve them. Your mind is hardwired to fulfill your highest values and will sabotage anything that you aim for that it cannot see as related to these. Now I take my clients through a great process to find out what their values really are and how to link their goals to this, but I wanted to give you all a quick tool to do that for yourselves this year so that you can find your purpose and get on with living it!

My friend, Tyron, recently did a post in his brilliant Happy Creative blog about Finding your Big Idea. In this he references the Purpose framework of Neil Crofts and Dawn Waldron, and I thought this was a great quick tool for you, as parents, to find your path this year.
To define your purpose you need to look at the intersection of three things in your life – your talents, your passion and your anger. You then write up a mission statement based on these that goes like this:
My life’s purpose is to use my
(PASSION)
to
(TALENT AS A VERB)
(INVERSE OF ANGER)
I’ll walk you through mine so you know what to do.
First brainstorm each area and just jot down anything that comes to mind in each. So I had my talents as helping people, coaching, teaching, being organized, writing, public speaking, running workshops. I then summarized this as SHARING INFORMATION. I brainstormed my passions or things that I enjoy as reading, learning, spiritual pursuits, attending courses. I summarized this as SELF DEVELOPMENT. I then brainstormed what made me angry and came up with a long list including people treating kids badly, pharmaceutical companies lying about side effects, doctors taking advantage of their patient’s medical ignorance, teachers belittling their students, wife batterers, child abusers etc. I summarized these as VULNERABLE PEOPLE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF.
So if I put these three into the formula above I get:
My life’s purpose is to use my
SELF DEVELOPMENT
to
SHARE INFORMATION
TO EMPOWER PEOPLE
If you think about what I do and how much I love what I do, this makes perfect sense. I am constantly reading and attending courses and workshops and I share this information in my coaching, writing, talks and workshops. I have focused my business on sharing information with parents because I know that this is the best way for me to empower the most amount of people (I get to help two generations in one) and particularly those who are most likely to be vulnerable (women and children).
There you have it – why I am so happy doing what I do. You can be too! Find your purpose and link all your goals to fulfilling this. You are an amazing person with a special purpose on this planet that you are designed to fulfill. And the more you give yourself permission to do this, the more you give everyone you come across permission to live out their highest values too – your partner, kids, family, friends, colleagues, associates… Go and live your dreams and inspire everyone else to do the same.
If you find yourself riddled with limiting beliefs that tell you that you can’t fulfill your purpose (I’m not good enough, I have to please everyone else, I’ll never have enough time/money/skills etc) then give me a call. No matter where you are or what you have been through, it is possible. I can assist you in clearing out anything standing in your way!
Wishing you an awesome 2015 where you are the change you want to see in your kids!
