Our attitudes towards stress and what we teach our children to think abou tit are far more important than how much stress our kids actually face in their lives. Stress is an inevitable part of life, but studies show that it is not stress itself that kills us but our beliefs about it. What are you teaching your kids about stress and how to handle it? This talk by Kelly McGonigal will give you a fresh perspective on stress, one that will help you to help your kids become friends wirht their stress instead of letting it get the better of them!
Many years ago I watched a talk by Sugata Mitra on his Hole in the Wall experiment. He has now taken this experiment to the next level, showing just how well kids can teach themselves when provided with the right equipment and left in groups to figure things out. His results are beyond astonishing and give hope for the future of education particularly in more remote areas or areas lacking in good teachers. Such an enlightening, fun, and mind boggling talk - definitely worth a watch! One of my favourite speakers on education, Ken Robinson speaks about the three essential ingredients to create a climate for true education - a system where learners actually learn: Individualisation, curiosity and creativity. Without these elements, we have teachers in the act of teaching but not actually bringing about any learning. An inspiring look at what we can do to improve the situation! Almost all of your child's behavioural and health issues can be improved by making healthier food choices. And yet, when I suggest this to parents they always go into some kind of a panic. What will we eat? How will I stop them from eating all the junk? I love this talk, as it just simplifies it all down to one simple step - remove the culprits! It really is doable. In this magical talk, Brian Miller explains how to connect with people so that they really feel understood. This is such an important lesson for parents. So many children feel unheard, unloved and misunderstood - not because they are, but because their parents don't know how to get into their frame of mind and speak to them in a way that they will really understand. I teach parents a simple tool, that you can learn in less than an hour, designed to help them to really connect with their kids on a very deep and meaningful level. If you're interested in that, book an hour with me (either in person or via Skype) and I'll show you how to have incredible, lasting communication and connection with your kids, spouse and anyone else in your life. We're not always aware of how deeply our kids think about things, the kind of insight they have into life's deeper questions. It's worth asking. Listen to what this 9 year old has to say - quite profound! Children with learning disabilities are still being told that they have to learn to live with it, that there is nothing that can be done, that they must find ways to compensate. In this talk, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young shows how brain plasticity can be used to reshape the brain in ways that will transform the lives of those with learning difficulties. This is the perfect marriage between neuroscience and education. We're raising our children to live lives like us - lives of doing things we don't enjoy just to make money to keep living to keep doing things we don't enjoy. What if we thought differently? What if we considered the question of what we would be doing if money was no object? What if we raised our children to pursue what really made them come alive instead of what was a sensible career path?? I have been so moved by Johann Hari's research into addiction and how we can genuinely help addicts to move beyond. He goes right to the heart of the matter, beyond all the rubbish we've been sold about what causes addiction and how to "win the war" against it. This talk is ESSENTIAL for anyone who has an addict in their family or in their life. We have to start helping these addicts to find meaning again. Everyone has a purpose and a desire to make a difference in the world. Everyone needs to love and be loved. Because, as Johann says, "the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, it's connection" We all have those times in our life where we feel like we just cannot cope - particularly as parents. Sometimes the day is just too long, there are too many financial burdens, too many things seem to be hitting us all in one go. Take a look at what one man did when he needed to cope - such an inspiration, and such simple ideas that anyone can follow. Enjoy! |
