Homemade Sunscreen

3/6/2014

As I'm quite fussy about what my kids are exposed to, I decided that I'd had enough of all the toxic chemicals (including carcinogens and xenoestogens) in the off-the-shelf sunscreens. So, I made my own. I have tried and tested this on myself and my girls, and even with my fair, easy to burn skin, it works wonders.

Here it is...

Ingredients:

Half a cup of Shea Butter
4 Tablespoons of Beeswax
Half a cup of coconut oil
2 Tablespoons of Zinc Oxide
A few drops of essential oils (not citrus)

Method:

Combine the shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax in a glass bowl placed over a hot pot of water. Heat on low until the ingredients are completely melted... The beeswax takes a couple of minutes to melt, but it will! Remove from heat and stir in the zinc oxide and the essential oils. Pour into silicone moulds and place in the fridge to cool for about 30 minutes. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Notes:

You can hold the bars in your hand and smear onto yourself in cooler weather. As it heats up it will melt and then you can use it like a lotion. It feels amazing - like a rich cream. It is the only sunscreen I've ever used that hasn't given me pimples.

You can still tan with this on, but won't burn.
