Mia Von Scha speaks at the Treehouse Talks online parenting summit about the Bully-Proof Vest. Here is a sample of that talk. For the full talk, please visit Treehouse Talks or find it in my online store.

With all the anti-bullying campaigns out there, why is bullying still rife on our playgrounds and in our workplaces? Is there anything we can do to help our kids? To protect them? To help them to have an enjoyable experience over their 12 years of schooling and beyond?

In this talk you will find out why kids get bullied, why kids become bullies, and why your own family dynamics may be contributing to the problem.

In this talk we’ll look at the bigger picture of how the bullying dynamic fits into the larger sphere of your family and life. We’ll look at how certain things that you may be doing or not doing can contribute to your child’s chances of ending up a victim of bullying, and what you can do to shift this dynamic.

We’ll also look at something that no other bullying programs out there look at: the silver lining – why bullying has a place in the world, how it contributes to growth, why (no matter what we do) we will never eradicate it in our schools, and why we wouldn’t want to.

Then I’ll show you how understanding this can provide your child not only with the tools to navigate school, but the tools to handle any relationship or difficult situation that will inevitably show up at some point in their lives.

This talk goes beyond bullying to essential life skills that can transform anyone’s life regardless of their current challenge!

Hi Tracy. It definitely sounds like there need to be more boundaries in your home. This is one of the most challenging aspects of parenting, so I wouldn't say you've gone wrong, but just that you haven't had the right guidance in getting it right. It isn't easy. My short answer to your problem is to get your kids who are being bullied into some form of martial arts training. This can do wonders for kids who don't know how to stand up for themselves. But the main thing you'll need to do is to learn to stand up for yourself so that you can be a role model for them of how its done. If they've always seen their siblings walking all over you then they don't know what it looks like to have someone put respectful boundaries in place. You can start by not doing anything for your 10 year old that he can do for himself. It'll be chaotic at first, but he'll come right in time. He may have stinky breath until someone points it out to him and he decides to do it for himself - allow him to experience some of those natural consequences. We'll cover some of this in our upcoming free webinar. You can register for that here: http://www.transformationalparenting.guru/respectfulparenting.html Hopefully that will get you started on this journey. At the end of the webinar we'll have a link for you to join our online community where you can ask all your questions... it helps to break it down into specific examples and handle them one at a time until you get the hang of doing this consistently. Good luck, and go easy on yourself - this parenting stuff takes a lot of courage!
